No visit to Australia’s famous top end will be complete without a visit to one of the world’s most remote and untamed wilderness, Kakadu National Park. Just the enormous size of Kakadu National Park is overwhelming to some. At a staggering 5 million acres, the park is nearly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu National Park is also on UNESCO’s World Heritage list due to its enormous cultural and international significance. The Aboriginal rock art sites are simply breathtaking, and one of the main draw cards to the national park.
Backpackers on a budget will certainly be able to experience the awesomeness that Kakadu National Park has to offer without breaking the bank. Many specialty backpacker tour operators organize visits to Kakadu National Park from Darwin, which is only 170 kilometers away. Those more adventurous can experience Kakadu National Park by themselves.
Within the boundaries of Kakadu National Park there are many designated campsites, with most only charging a small fee for the privilege of being able to camp there. This fee covers the use of the provided shower and toilet facilities. For the ultra budget conscious backpackers there are many free campsites as well, but they only have the most basic of facilities provided.
